World Cancer Day Blog – Raising Cancer Awareness

Every year on February 4th, WORLD CANCER DAY aims to unite the world’s population in the fight against cancer by raising awareness for cancer and encouraging its prevention, detection, and treatment by pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action.

Founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008, the primary objective of World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer by 2020. However, cancer remains the second leading cause of death worldwide; over eight million people die from cancer annually and death rates are still on the rise. This certainly make the 2020 objective no small feat.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of cancer related deaths will increase annually to 13 million by 2030. Nevertheless, hope remains – European companies are successfully expanding the range of drugs and therapies to treat various cancer indications and are pushing the boundaries of science by developing individualized and targeted approaches to cancer treatments. On a positive note, never have so many new drugs and therapies been in development to treat cancer. Internationally, the first approval of a cancer gene therapy generated great excitement in August 2017, when Swiss-based pharma Novartis received FDA approval of Kymriah®, a CAR-T cell therapy to treat an aggressive form of leukemia.

Currently in Europe, approximately 400 companies are developing innovative approaches to fight cancer, andmany of our clients are actively involved in oncological indications. We introduced the World Cancer Day Blog in 2017 to provide an information platform for innovative  treatment options in development and emerging scientific approaches – giving great hope that in the future many types of cancer will at least have successful treatment options and eventually be curable. #WorldCancerDay #WeCanICan.
